WISAblock Technical data sheet (Health and Safety at Work act 1974)

1 Before use of the WISAblock system, ensure all users read and understand all instructions, warnings, cautions and notes discussed within this document and within the installation guidance contained within the product boxes

2 The WISAblock™ is designed and tested only as a system. The System includes the WISAblocks™ and lengths of standard Columbian Construction Grade 2″ x 4″s,. Other uses with different components should be tested if employers intend to rely on the device for safety of the employees. (Note: a single 4.2m lengths of standard Columbian lumber stock 2″ x 4″s were used in the WISA test regime.

3 Use of components that have not been designed and/or tested for use with this system can be dangerous and lead to injury or death. Contact WISA Ltd if you are unsure about using WISAblock in the recommended guidance.

4 The WISAblock™ is not a fall protection device. It is used as part of a total system to reduce the risk of impalement on exposed reinforced steel starter bars when a worker or individual falls. Additional fall protection or positioning devices should be used to prevent falls to the level of the rebar. (See Working at height regulations 2005)2

5 The WISAblock™ System has been tested to resist a 114kgsandbag dropped from up to 3m directly onto the top of the suspended timber using 3 WISAblock’s at a distance of 1.5m apart onto rebar starter bars at an indicative spacing to recreate a typical site scenario. ( See WISAblock test report)

The System should not be relied upon to protect a heavier worker falling from this height or any worker falling from a higher point.

6 Treat WISAblock™ System with respect. Fatality is a real threat if not! Use care when moving, shipping or storing WISAblock™. Use only WISAblock™ in good condition, and timber without defects or weaknesses. If damaged from use or rough handling—remove from service. If there is any doubt, remove from service and contact for advice fromWISA Ltd at www.wisablock .co.uk

7 Any WISAblock™ System or component part of a system that is involved in a personal fall incident or is struck by a weight shall be removed from service immediately and discarded or returned to WISA Ltd for inspection.

8 Failure to install, use and/or remove WISAblock™equipment in a safe manner by competent persons can result in serious injury or death. Until the WISAblock™ is correctly installed, use alternate fall protection means. Additional training may be required. Risk assessment must be carried out at all times.

9 WISAblock™ allows spacing up to 1.5m between units. However, you should use additional WISAblock™ to ensure that all rebar stays under the piece of timber, or if timber isdisplaced by workers or any person interfering with the system. If at any time any person observes any rebar exposed. Stop work in the vicinity to the WISAblock™ System, and readjust or reinstall the System before work commences in that area.

10 The WISAblock™ System is a multiple use system however If involved in arresting a fall or the System is struck with a weight (or a load), the units involved should be taken out of service and replaced. Contact WISA Ltd for assistance.

11 The WISAblock™ Systems were tested on rigidly supported various size rebar( See test report). The WISAblock™ is designed to fit on rebar from 10 -32mm. Some deformation to the rebar is possible when a fall occurs. WISA Ltd cannot be responsible for the stability or quality of the structure that WISAblock™ system is applied to, or for consequential damages to the structure from the effects of the fall. Note: Destruction and/or deformation of the timber, WISAblock™ and likely the rebar is expected and is a natural consequence as part of the deflection and absorption of the impact forces.

12 WISAblock minimum shelf life guidance. – WISA Ltd advises minimum shelf life of 3 years based on product material Technical data sheets and specifications produced under reach regulations by polymer manufacturers.

13 This device does not guarantee your safety; WISA Ltd and the manufacturers of WISAblock does not guarantee that no injury will occur if a person falls onto the WISAblock™ system while working above or adjacent to this unit. Use of this device is only expected to reduce the likelihood of serious injury and limit the penetration of the rebar into a person’s body if a fall occurs. Other means should be considered to limit the likelihood of a fall as well, which may include but are not limited to fall arrest and fall positioning equipment, scaffolds, guardrails, nets, man lifts, ladders,ramps, aerial lifts, and others. (See Working at height regulations 2005) Risks inherent to falling onto a 2″ x

4″standard Columbian lumber, WISAblock and to the ground from heights are assumed entirely by the user and the

employer of the users. The employer has a duty under HASAWA 1974to provide a safe workplace. The WISAblock™ System and other methods may be considered to minimize injuries inherent within the construction industry relating to work in the vicinity of exposed reinforced steel starter bars.

14 Do not use WISAblocks™ until you have been adequately trained and fully understand the WISAblock device and system including warnings and the instructions. Installation Instructions



1 In order to use WISAblock™ correctly, ensuring compliance with applicable HASAWA 1974, the Installer must follow these instructions and installation guidelines and ensure that competent staff understands and implements the following at a minimum.

2 It is the Installer’s responsibility to safely and properly install and maintain the WISAblock™ System and to provide a safe work environment including access and egress, controlling all hazards relating to installation and work being carried out in the vicinity of the inherent risk. WISAblock and its system must be installed by a competent person.

3 Do not use the WISAblock™ alone. WISAblock must be used with 2″ x 4″ timber to be securely mounted over various size rebar to form a complete system. All component parts must be used, properly secured and in good condition before any work overhead or adjacent to the WISAblock™ System is allowed to proceed. NOTE: Differing lengths of timber does not affect WISAblock capability to reduce the risk of impalement unless it is not suspended adequately.

4 Place the WISAblock™ female end over the rebar . Ensure that the WISAblock™ is securely attached to the rebar by pressing and twisting it down all the way as the bar allows it to penetrate. On larger bars, you may have to twist the WISAblock™ to adequately secure.

5 WISAblock™ should be placed at no greater than 1.5m spacing. If a longer lengths of timber is used, additional WISAblock’s™ shall be positioned close to the ends of the timber. Use additional WISAblock™ to ensure that all rebar is positioned directly beneath the center of the timber. If starter bars are of irregular height, place WISAblock™ on the highest bars, without exceeding any other limitations herein.

If at any time any worker observes any rebar exposed, stop work above and next to the WISAblock™ system and readjust or reinstall the system.

6 Set the correct sized, standard grade, good quality timber through the WISAblock and position to your requirements. Do not butt the ends of two pieces of timber in a single WISAblock™ . Each piece of timber must be supported adequately using spacing guidlines.

7 Do not use small lengths of timber in a single WISAblock™. The system must have at least two WISAblock’s™ and the piece of lumber must be at least as long as two adjacent rebars.

8 Do not butt the ends of two pieces of timber over an exposed starter bar. The intersection of two pieces of lumbershould be in-between two adjacent starter bars.

9 Ensure that all reinforced steel starter bars are aligned in the row and aligned underneath the center of the length of timber to eliminate the risk of impalement. Use additional Systems on adjacent lines of exposed reinforced steel starter bars. Use additional WISAblock on exposed reinforced steel starter bars that tend to bend out from the center point of the length of timber. Pull it back into line , to center it under the center of the length of timber.

10 Vertical and inclined applications are also acceptable however do not use overhead in an inverted application of WISAblock™ which could potentially become unsecured and drop from the overhead bars by gravity and potentially strike and injure someone below.

11 The WISAblock system must not be used as a means of working platform. WISAblock and the WISAblock system has been designed and tested solely as a means to reduce the risk of impalement when the potential of falling onto exposed bars arises.

12 The WISAblock system must be used in conjunction with an adequate method statement and risk assessment carried out by a competent person as stipulated in the HASAWA 1974 and the Management of Health and safety Regulations 1999.


The product is only warranted to be free from material manufacturing defects at the time it is produced and shipped. Based on the variety of conditions and the variable for the use of this product, the Manufacturer, and its sellers, agents, successors and assigns make no warranties or guarantees expressed or implied, including but not limited to warranties for fitness for purpose, merchantability, marketability, or performance, or for level of protection offered. These instructions and warnings are purely advisory and they and the product are intended for the purpose of assisting the client in loss control, safety and risk management procedures. Implementation and use of the WISAblock™ System as a part of the user’s total loss control and safety program, and/or compliance with suggestions and recommendations made or offered by WISA Ltd., and proper and lawful use of any information given by them, is the sole responsibility of the user. User, by using this product, agrees that it has the sole responsibility for the decision to use the product for protection and accepts the limitations of the product as described herein and in available test reports. If user does not agree, they are advised to not use the product, and return it postage paid for a prompt full refund.

WISAblock is 100% recyclable and if damaged can be returned to the Manufacturer – CODA Plastics
